Blue Flag
Over the beaches of Schouwen-Duiveland, the Blue Flag flies. This is something we are proud of. It means that our beaches and bathing waters are clean and safe. The Blue Flag is an international environmental award that is given annually to beaches that meet high-quality requirements.
Baywatch and flags
During summer, most beaches in Schouwen-Duiveland are patrolled and watched by our lifeguards. The red-yellow flags show where lifeguards are present. When the red flag is raised, it is forbidden to go into the sea. The yellow flag indicates that you are allowed to swim in the sea at your own risk. However, you may not take inflatables like air mattresses into the water.
Dangers from currents and tides
Swimming in the sea is wonderful. Nevertheless, it is good to always stay alert in the water. The sea has a lot of power and therefore, swimming is not always safe. Keep an eye on the flags and don't go too far into the water. If you take an inflatable object with you into the water, make sure you don't accidentally drift too far away from shore. Always accompany your children, even if they only want to bathe their feet.
Please be especially careful at sandbank Verklikkerplaat between beach accesses Duinhoevepad and Wilhelminahoeve. At low tide, the water around the sandbank recedes and you can walk across from the beach onto the bank. However, when the tide comes in, the connection disappears very quickly, and you are suddenly surrounded by water. Therefore, at high tide stay on the beach and walk along in front of or behind the dunes. Take the warning signs seriously.
