Natural beaches
The coastlines of Schouwen-Duiveland are protected nature reserves, as they are very rich in flora and fauna. Seabirds drift on the waves and occasionally dive to search for food. Smaller birds like "the plover" wait at the edge of the water for small animals to come out at low tide. Many birds breed at the beach Verklikkerstrand. Therefore, some sections of the beach are closed during the breeding season to give the birds their space.
You may encounter a seal on the beach. They often sunbathe on the beach or swim between the beach poles. Please leave the seals alone and walk around them keeping a distance. If a seal looks sick, you can call 144. The seal ward will come to take care of the animal.
Water sport
The beaches on Schouwen-Duiveland are a paradise for water sports fans: surfing, fiving, sailing, swimming, stand-up paddling and so much more. Conquering the waves of the North Sea requires skill, endurance, and courage. On the Grevelingenmeer the sea is a bit calmer, making it perfect for beginners. Which sport are you gonna try this summer?
