Zierikzee's nicest square hosts hip Montmartre-style markets all summer and a few times in spring and autumn.
The origins of Plein Montmaertre lie in 2012. That's when new premises came up, replacing old dilapidated warehouses. At first, there was a car park here, but it was transformed into a cosy square. Together with local residents, the square was given shape. In 2014, artists from the neighbouring Beddeweeg created a mural on a side wall of the square. In 2015, the initiative arose to organise Montmaertre. Every Saturday in July and August and a few more times in spring and autumn, the square is transformed into an art exhibition. Artists work on the square with paint, pencil, clay, fabric, wood and metal.

There will be a workshop table and/or an easel with blank canvas ready for the public to join in painting. Visitors can also make jigsaw puzzles or play a game of chess, and there is a frog fountain as a centrepiece. There is also a lucnchrome where people can get something to eat and drink. These refreshments are made by and for participants.
Since 2016, the : Montmaertre Foundation. The aim of the foundation is to organise small cultural events, where the public can learn about art and culture at an accessible level.
