Straô Renesse
Between February and March, the Straô riding tradition takes place in six villages on the island of Schouwen: Burgh-Haamstede, Ellemeet, Scharendijke, Serooskerke, Renesse, and Noordwelle. The highlight of Straô is washing the horses' hooves in the sea, with the riders remaining seated on their horses during the process.
Riders and horses gather in the morning at a designated starting point and head to the beach around midday. Each village follows its own schedule.
Straô Renesse 2025 takes place on February 8, and the program is as follows:
Program:
- 10:15 AM: Gathering of Straô riders and horses, registration, and judging of horses and ponies at the transferium.
- 11:00 AM: Departure to the beach.
- 11:45 AM: Crossing Jan van Renesseweg and washing the horses’ legs. !!Attention: keep a 10-meter distance from the horses!!
- 12:30 PM: Start of children’s festivities; registration from 12:00 PM at the Lange Reke.
