Middeleeuwse Toestanden 1304 - 1323 | Zierikzee

The battle for Zeeland between Flanders and Holland reached its climax on August 10 and 11, 1304, with the Siege of Zierikzee. For the third time, the city was attacked by the Flemish. The situation was dire: stones and arrows filled the air, and the defenses strained. But the city held firm. Just in time, a Franco-Dutch fleet arrived to assist, and one of the largest naval battles of the Middle Ages erupted before Zierikzee’s gates. The victory went to Zierikzee, and in 1323, peace was formally established, bringing Zeeland under the authority of the Count of Holland, Zeeland, and Hainaut.

In 2025, we commemorate this historic event, 700 years after the formal peace. Zierikzee will host numerous activities focused on the Siege and the Naval Battle. Visit historic sites like the Dikke Toren, Havenplein, and Noordhavenpoort, and experience history through spectacular re-enactments.
