Steenzwaan
Visit the unique beauty of the Steenzwaan, the only remaining part of the once lively Zwemer. This lively river offers a peaceful environment for a relaxing walk along the water or an adventurous canoe trip. The area around the Steenzwaan is still rich in salty vegetation such as samphire and milkweed, and attracts numerous birds, including the Godwit, Plover, and Spoonbill.
The Dutch forestry commission has ensured that the grasslands along the creek are kept short by allowing cattle to graze, leaving open spaces for young, salty plants to grow. The Norwegian lemming is a unique inhabitant of this wet and salty area and is abundant here.
