Krekengebied Ouwerkerk

Discover the beautiful Krekengebied Ouwerkerk, a 140-hectare nature reserve that was transferred to Staatsbosbeheer after the dike breach in 1953 and has flourished in its current form since then.

The area consists of a forest of oaks, poplars, ashes, elms, and beeches where many songbirds such as the chiffchaff and willow warbler breed and where you can spot kingfishers, swans, woodpeckers, grebes, and birds of prey. In the winter months, there is even a chance to see the peregrine falcon diving on its prey at 90 kilometers per hour.

The inlet between the sea dike and the large creek along the Weg van de Buitenlandse Pers is an ideal place for coastal birds to breed and flee from the high water in the Oosterschelde. Salt-loving plants such as samphire and sea aster grow here.
