Natuurgebied Plaat van Vliet

Plaat van Vliet is a former sandbank that dried up after the damming of the Krammer-Volkerak in 1987 and is now a unique piece of nature. Plaat van Vliet harbours rare plant species that are characteristic of moist, calcareous dunes, including parnassia, winter heliotrope, common centaury and various orchids. To prevent the growth of encroaching shrubs, the grazing of the rare plants is carefully managed.

The surrounding water is rich in birds, including various species of grebes, ducks such as the red-breasted merganser, the goldeneye and the smew, and many other water and marsh birds. For bird lovers, the Krammer observation tower and a birdwatching hide are available.
