Karolingische burg (Ringwalburg)

The Karolingian castle, also known as the Ringwalburg, is an impressive historical defense structure from the end of the 9th century. The castle was built to protect the region against the invasions of the Scandinavian Vikings, who sailed along the coast of Western Europe in search of territory and trade opportunities. When the coast became less fertile, the Vikings turned their attention to more inland areas, forcing the inhabitants to escalate their defense.

The Ringwalburg is an important witness to this turbulent time and shows how the Carolingians tried to protect themselves against Viking invasions. The imposing castle served as a strategic defense line and was equipped with many defense works. Between 2001 and 2007, the Ringwalburg was fully restored.
