Plompe Toren
The Plompe Tower on Schouwen-Duiveland is a striking building with a unique story about vanished villages. This tower symbolizes the disappearance of Westenschouwen and Koudekerke due to the power of water and storms. Climb the 23-meter-high tower and enjoy the breathtaking view of the history of this region. In the spring, you can spot curlews, avocets, black-tailed godwits, and black-headed gulls here, and in the winter, thousands of geese forage on the brackish grassland. Discover the fascinating history, architecture, and cultural heritage of this impressive tower. Between 1475 and 1650, more than fourteen villages disappeared due to dike breaches, and Koudekerke was almost completely abandoned. Only the church tower - the Plompe Tower - remained standing as a beacon for shipping on the Oosterschelde.
