Philipsdam
The Philipsdam is an impressive feat of engineering and an important part of the Delta Works. This dam, approximately 7 kilometers long, separates the freshwater Krammer and Volkerak from the saltwater Oosterschelde, and connects the Grevelingendam to Sint Philipsland via the N257. The Philipsdam is of great value to agriculture and the mussel and oyster culture, thanks to the innovative Krammersluizen system that cleverly separates fresh and saltwater.
Annually, around 90,000 sailors (both recreational and professional) make use of the Krammersluizen. The observation tower was renovated in 2021 and provides a view of the passing vessels. Although the sluice system is not accessible to the public, it is definitely worth visiting the observation tower and admiring the impressive view of the Philipsdam and its surroundings.

The construction of the Philipsdam and the Oesterdam was necessary to maintain the reinforced tidal flow, which is of great importance to the flora, fauna, and mussel culture in the area. The construction of the Oosterscheldekering resulted in a reduced difference between high and low tide, which meant that this reinforced tidal flow had to be preserved.
The Philipsdam is a unique and special place to visit, both because of its historical value and the innovative technology behind it.
