During this 12.1 km walk through the dunes of Renesse, you can enjoy beautiful views. Not only wind and water, but also people have left their mark on this area. Farmers created a unique cultural landscape here. The dunes of Renesse form a beautiful nature reserve with an incredible variety of landscapes. During this walk, you can enjoy expansive views over old and young dunes. In addition to being a nature reserve, this is also a unique cultural landscape where "elzenmeten" and "haaimannen" were created. Humans have contributed a lot to the appearance of this area.
The route passes by both old and young dunes. The "Verklikkerduinen" clearly belong to the latter category. These steep dunes are named after the beacon ("verklikker") that once stood here. You will find many wet dune valleys with a special flora. Inland, the dunes gradually become flatter. This transitional area was formerly used by farmers. To prevent sand drift, they created woodlands. The old plots, called "haaimannen" or "elzenmeten," can still be clearly recognized.
Renesse is a cozy tourist village with plenty of catering establishments to grab a refreshing drink after the walk. Renesse has been a seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century. The ring village is built around the central Jacobuskerk with a tower from the 15th century and a ship from the 16th century. The beach at Renesse is wonderfully wide and offers plenty of space for walkers. Tip: bring your binoculars. At low tide, you can spot seals on sandbanks off the coast. Haven't seen anything? Then go for a second chance in the center of Renesse. There are several locations with seal sculptures to be seen.
