Explore a fascinating horseback route through the history and nature of Schouwen-Duiveland!
Start in Capelle, a former part of Nieuwerkerk, with a centuries-old cemetery surrounded by majestic trees. Before the devastating flood of 1953, Capelle was a cozy village with houses, a shop, and an inn.
Continue your ride to Ouwerkerk, a typical Zeeland ring village dating back to 1233, where the old church and tower were destroyed during World War II and the flood. The Noorsestraat, featuring identical wooden houses donated by Norway after the 1953 flood, is a unique sight. The 1953 flood left deep marks in the eastern part of Schouwen-Duiveland, now transformed into a 140-hectare recreation area with water and forest. Enjoy poplars, oaks, beeches, and ash trees providing shelter and food for animals and birds.
On your left, you'll find the former hunting lodge of Baron Schimmelpenninck van der Oye, now a nature area with a peaceful earthen wall. An enthralling journey through the time and nature of Schouwen-Duiveland!
